Seven of Spades

Seven of Spades

Long after the flood
Long after pyramid
On the day of blood
When nail,
with hammer was hit

Back then,
the spirit lit him up
Like an orange fire
lantern his face
Such fate,
when his true time was up
Even the devil wouldn’t
lay him to waste
He had won the robe
of a king
In a game
he played just for kicks
This man’s cloak,
strange future would bring
Tried it on,
by the trees of crossed sticks

Something odd
in this humble weave
He saw a reason to go
His town he set out to leave
Somehow,
he knew for the robe
Then the devil came
to claim him
But his coat bought him
seven more licks
He had caught
the world’s Adversary
In his coat pocket for tricks
After years,
exactly seven more
He held the Adversary
in pocket
And shewed him
God's crucifix
Saying, what’s this?
A mere soldier of Rome
Has now outsmarted
The lord of the river Styx!

So, the devil was forced
to let this man go
Yet, how could a one
of nature so shrewd
Ever hope to find heaven for home
After wandering earth
seven score
He travelled to knock upon
hell’s burning door
He pleaded:
Please give me a job
I’m weary from travelling
the whole world for more

The great light bearer
gave him a flame
And said:
This will help you
when your spirit be poor

But you must leave us now go
And your presence
I want nevermore
I swear by this fire’s
sweet glow
Against angels you now
declare war
You will be forever their foe
You shall wander all over
earth’s face,
Though you never, ever shall find
A true and still
resting place
